ReGen Madagascar
ReGen Madagascar is a regeneration Project across 50,000 hectares in the Ambalavao District, originated by Our Planet Our Future in partnership with the University of Fianarantsoa and 19 participating communes, and with the support of the Archdiocese of Antananarivo.
Rooted in local knowledge and academic excellence, the Project proposes to restore degraded lands, advance agroforestry, and build sustainable livelihoods. The Project aims to embody a new model of Malagasy-led regeneration that blends research, tradition, and innovation.
Proposed Project activities have demonstrated that they can be effective and measurable in driving carbon sequestration. Activities such as tree planting, cover cropping, and rotational grazing have proven track records. Established standards and methodologies exist for the likely Project activities. There are no methodological or technical barriers present to developing ReGen Madagascar.
The Project will focus on native species for the restoration of degraded landscapes. These species will be selected in partnership with the University of Fianarantsoa and landholders. Separately from native restoration activities, agroforestry activities will target high-value species to drive community impact. These agroforestry activities will likely be located directly adjacent to settlements.
ReGen Madagascar is an opportunity to drive substantial impact across climate, community, and biodiversity. This impact will be particularly significant given the mutually reinforcing dynamics of poverty and environmental degradation existing in the region.
Key Partners In Madagascar
The University of Fianarantsoa is a public university in Madagascar, having about 24,000 students. The university emphasizes research and higher education oriented toward national development, especially in rural development, innovation, and employability of graduates. The university is also engaged in research in biodiversity conservation, environmental degradation, and climate change.
Roseline Emma Rasolovoahangy is a scientist, entrepreneur, environmental advocate, and public servant. She has been a candidate in Madagascar’s presidential elections in 2013 and 2018. She is Founder & President of Malagasy Mivoatra ny Tanjona, an NGO focused on poverty alleviation in Madagascar. Emma is Our Planet Our Future’s Country Director in Madagascar.ReGen Buipe
ReGen Buipe, Our Planet Our Future’s first Project in Ghana, aims to restore approximately 85,000 hectares of degraded Savannah woodland to sequester atmospheric carbon, restore ecosystem services, and improve community livelihoods.
ReGen Mwenda Chiefdom
In 2025 Our Planet Our Future has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Zambia and Caritas Zambia. ReGen Mwenda Chiefdom, Out Planet Our Future’s first Project in Zambia, is being designed to turn restoration into reality across 90,000 hectares of land.
